Answer a few questions and see how the 2025 reform (Law 74/2025) affects your right to Italian citizenship.

What changed in 2025

Decree-Law 36/2025, converted into Law 74/2025, now holds that people born abroad who have another citizenship were never Italian, with some exceptions. The main exceptions are: a parent or grandparent who holds only Italian citizenship; a parent who lived in Italy for 2 consecutive years before the birth; and applications or lawsuits filed by March 27, 2025.

Recent decisions

  • April 30, 2026: the Constitutional Court upheld the reform (judgment 63/2026).
  • July 23, 2026: the Constitutional Court referred the question of compatibility with EU law to the Court of Justice of the EU (order 147/2026). The law remains in force in the meantime.
  • July 26, 2026: the Court of Cassation (Joint Chambers, judgment 24045/2026) ruled on the so-called "minor issue" for applications filed before the reform.
