Living in Monza

Monza is our home. A mid-sized, green and well-organized city, about 10 minutes by train from Milan. Many people choose Monza to have Milan close by without paying Milan rent.

Rotta Italia was born here: the founder's family lives in Monza. We know the streets, the schools and the comune's procedures from our own experience, not just from research.

Who Monza makes sense for

Monza has about 124,000 residents and is the capital of the province of Monza and Brianza, one of the most industrialized and business-dense areas of Lombardy.

  • Families who want a park, a school close to home and a calm routine.
  • People who work in Milan but prefer to come home to a smaller city at the end of the day.
  • Remote professionals who need good trains and two airports nearby.

If you don't go to Milan every day, a pass for the Monza zone only is cheaper. Run your budget in the cost of living calculator.

Neighborhoods to consider

  • Centro storico: the Duomo, the Arengario and shops within walking distance; old buildings and little parking.
  • Zona Parco / San Biagio: near the Park and the Villa Reale, popular with families.
  • Triante and San Fruttuoso: residential, with schools and services, slightly lower rent.
  • Zona Stazione: practical if you take the train every day.
  • Villasanta and Vedano al Lambro: towns next to the park, more space for the same price.

Schools

Italian public school is free and open to children of foreign residents. Enrollment for the first year is online, usually in January; if you arrive mid-year, you deal directly with the neighborhood school.

The city has the International School of Monza (IB programs, ages 2 to 18, with campuses in Monza and Villasanta; for elementary and middle school, about € 14,000 to € 20,000 per year, depending on the source and the grade) [confirm fees with the school]. Many families also use the international schools in northern Milan.

Health care

The main hospital is San Gerardo (Fondazione IRCCS San Gerardo dei Tintori), a university hospital with an ER and pediatrics. There is also the Policlinico di Monza, a private hospital within the SSN, and the hospital in Desio. Once you have residency, you register with the SSN and choose a family doctor. See our list of Portuguese-speaking doctors.

Transportation

  • Train: Monza station has about 60 trains a day to Milan, between regional and suburban (S) lines, going to Centrale, Porta Garibaldi and the Passante.
  • Airports: Linate (LIN) is the closest; Orio al Serio (BGY) and Malpensa (MXP) are farther away, by car or train.
  • High-speed rail: Frecciarossa and Italo leave from Milano Centrale, just a few minutes away.
  • Metro: the extension of the M5 line to Monza is under construction [confirm expected completion].

Climate

Po Valley climate: hot, humid summers and cold, foggy winters. Winter air quality is a weak point of the whole region. Monza Park makes a big difference in daily life.

Pros and cons

Pros

Milan 10 minutes away, much lower rent, Monza Park, a safe city on a human scale, full services.

Cons

Limited nightlife, few international schools in the city itself, traffic in Brianza, heavy crowds on the Formula 1 GP weekend.

Frequently asked questions

Can I live in Monza and work in Milan?

Yes, it's the most common case. Trains are frequent and fast. The Mi1–Mi4 pass covers train, metro and bus in both cities.

Is Monza cheaper than Milan?

For rent, yes: a 1-bedroom in the center costs about 40% less, according to Numbeo. At the supermarket and in restaurants the difference is small. Compare them in the city comparison tool.

Why do you recommend Monza?

We don't recommend it for everyone. We live here and like it, but if you want nightlife or are studying in Milan, you may prefer the big city. We help you compare honestly.

Is it easy to register residency at the comune?

The process is the standard Italian one: a registered lease, a residency application and a visit from the municipal police. Timelines vary; plan for a few weeks.
