Living in Bari

The capital of Apulia, on the Adriatic. An organized city with moderate costs, a well-connected airport and easy access to the prettiest small towns in the South.

Who Bari makes sense for

Bari has about 316,000 residents. It is the main economic and university center of Apulia, with a port, a tech hub and lots of tourism in recent years.

  • Retirees who want the sea and a mild climate, living in Bari or in a small town nearby.
  • Remote professionals looking for lower costs and an airport with good European routes.
  • Families who are fine with an Italian public or bilingual school (international options are limited).

Neighborhoods to consider

  • Murat: the modern center, laid out in a regular grid, with shops and the central station.
  • Bari Vecchia: the old town, charming and touristy; small, older properties.
  • Madonnella / Lungomare: close to the sea and the center; a good balance.
  • Poggiofranco: residential and newer, with buildings that have garages; popular with families.
  • Torre a Mare / Santo Spirito: seaside neighborhoods at the edges of the city, quieter.

Schools

Public school is free and open to children of foreign residents, with online enrollment, usually in January.

International options in Bari are limited to private bilingual schools [confirm names and tuition with the schools]. The most established international schools in the region are in Brindisi, about 110 km away: International School of Brindisi (American) and European School Brindisi.

Health care

The main hospital is the Policlinico di Bari (a university hospital), which includes the Giovanni XXIII children's hospital. There are also the Ospedale Di Venere and San Paolo. Once you have residency, you register with the SSN and choose a family doctor. See our list of Portuguese-speaking doctors.

Transportation

  • Airport: Bari Karol Wojtyła (BRI), connected to the center by train.
  • Train: direct Frecciarossa to Milan along the Adriatic coast, about 6h 40m on the fastest service. To Rome, about 4 hours. Many people prefer to fly to Milan.
  • Around the region: regional trains to Polignano, Monopoli, Alberobello and Matera. Outside the city, a car helps a lot.

Climate

Mediterranean: hot, dry summers and mild, windy winters. Little rain for most of the year.

Retirees: the 7% regime

Retirees with a pension paid from abroad can opt for a 7% substitute tax on foreign income when they move to small towns in the South. Bari does not qualify. Since April 7, 2026, the limit is 30,000 residents (it used to be 20,000), under Law 34/2026, art. 26. In Apulia, towns like Polignano a Mare or Conversano may qualify [confirm each town's population].

You must not have been a tax resident in Italy in the previous five years, and the regime lasts up to ten years. Confirm your case with our partner commercialista before signing a lease.

Pros and cons

Pros
